Building a strong local economy is critical to sustaining a healthy community. Currently I sit on the Smart Growth Committee for the City of Port Coquitlam as your Citizen’s Advisor. Supporting local and Canadian made goods and services and buying local products are important. Working people need fair wages and working conditions. In order to put money back into our community we need to support local businesses and buy local products. A community’s economic fabric should be represented by its population’s diversity. I believe we are long overdue for more ice sheets and lacrosse fields for minor sports. I will advocate for continued growth in Arts, Culture and Theatre. Smart growth Principles need to continue as we expand our city wisely. I will advocate to find solutions for the homeless as they are an integral part of our society. I will advocate for affordable housing solutions so we can live, work and play in the City of Port Coquitlam.
When our family moved to Port Coquitlam 21 years ago there were no developments or houses on the north side of Coast Meridian from the Lougheed Highway to Riverwood Gate. Now this area continues to develop rapidly. I will advocate for practices in leadership in Energy and Environmental design LEED design; construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes and neighborhoods are adhered to. We need to look for ways we can reduce long commutes to work and create more green jobs. I believe it is important to protect our air quality, agricultural land, parks, rivers, green spaces and forests. We need to continue to look for ways we can improve our recycling program and ultimately reduce our carbon footprint. It is so important we protect our planet and sustain the environment for future generations.
Public transportation, biking and walking are all good for the environment. Vehicles that are electric are great options for larger Companies. The many trains in our rail yard need to be coordinated so better timing does not hold up traffic during rush hour commutes. I have heard from seniors that they need assistance with more affordable and flexible transportation solutions. Our bus stops needs to be maintained in a timely manner. Residences have indicated they would like to see more street lights that flash green at busy intersections to keep drivers alert, and our streets are free from debris for increased bicycle traffic. Many are wanting more and safer bicycle routes. Road maintenance and connecting major arterial routes need to be a priority. about you on social media? Above all your taxes need to be fair The current revitalization for the Community Recreation Complex, which includes Wilson Centre, the Public Library and Public Works Yard is a huge municipal undertaking. I will advocate for ways to minimize impacts on its development in relationship to property taxes. It is important to continually analyze the budget and find ways we can reduce costs going into the future. Public input is key in successfully administering democratic municipal government spending.
Increase the number of emergency responders: police, fire and ambulance. Return to the medical response system known as the Cain Report in 1989; this will lessen the wait times when seeking emergency medical assistance.
Burke Mountain development has displaced our wildlife; we need to work in harmony with nature. I will advocate for ways to stop bullying behaviors, particularly with our youth so they can grow up to be confident adults. Our neighborhoods need to be kept safe.
